
One of the largest game parks in South Africa, the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve is
renowned for its wide variety of bird and animal life. Besides the "Big 5" -
elephant, lion, leopard. buffalo and rhino - the elusive cheetah, wild dog and
nyala, along with many other well-known bushveld species, inhabit the park, offering
visitors an excellent game viewing experience. The park covers 96,000 hectares and
comprises of the Hluhluwe Game Reserve and the iMfolozi Game Reserve - two of South
Africa's oldest game reserves.
Hluhluwe Game Reserve: Named after a thorney monkey rope, "umHluhluwe" in Zulu,
which grow on the banks of the Hluhluwe River. The reserve is renowned for it's Rhino
conservation programme and is still the home to the world's highest concentration of white
rhinos. A number of viewing and picnic sites are allocated for visitors. It is only safe
to leave the confines of your car in these areas.
iMfolozi Game Reserve: Named after the Black and White Mfolozi Rivers, the reserve is
renowned for its abundant birdlife (more than 300 species). Animals that may be seen are:
black & white rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe, nyala, blue wildbeest
(gnu), hyaena, jackal, warthog, zebra, reedbuck, bushbuck, impala, steenbuck, duiker,
kudu, hippo, crocodile and other smaller species.
